MAKING A DIFFERENCE, ONE STEP AT A TIME

What's happening Jun 30, 2016

Imagine having to walk two hours to get life-saving water each and every day, or having to walk 10km to get to the nearest school. Women and children throughout Africa are often faced with these challenges, and our empathy and admiration for them served our the inspiration for Joy of Giving week this year.

Every year, B1G1 celebrates its anniversary through Joy of Giving week (JOGWeek), inviting others both within the B1G1 community and outside of it to take part in the joy that giving brings.

AND THIS YEAR, B1G1 TOOK JOG WEEK LITERALLY.

From June 20-26, for every 80,000 steps taken by our collective jogging community, a child in Cambodia received a year of access to a bicycle to help ensure that he or she could get to school, and remain an active student. With stunning step counts, JOGgers were able to feel a sliver of the hardship that some face every day, just to meet their basic needs.

Over the course of the week, we saw our JOGgers’ step count rise to awe-inspiring numbers, their giving impacts expand exponentially, and fatigue levels reach their absolute peak. But most importantly, we witnessed the strength, resilience, and collective effort of every single one of us, pushing our limits just to get those extra miles and steps counted.

We’re excited to share that a total of5,530,302 STEPS were taken by our JOGgers, equaling 69 YEARS OF BICYCLE ACCESS FOR THE CHILDREN IN CAMBODIA. JOGgers’ raised a total of93,824 IMPACTS, just by sharing the joy of giving with their networks.

The end of JOG week came not just as a relief for most of us, but as a great achievement both for individual JOGgers and for the B1G1 community as a whole. JOG week has not only pushed us to our physical limits but has filled our hearts with an appreciation of what we have and what we can offer to the world. It is said that for every year of school a Cambodian child completes, his or her future earnings will increase by 10 percent. B1G1 JOGgers’ extra mileage went a long way towards providing this crucial educational access, and a whole new future of opportunities for so many.

We invite you to watch the video below and witness the remarkable achievements of our JOGgers for yourself. If you’re interested to join Joy of Giving Week 2017, do indicate your interest through this form HERE!
