#1: BE OF SERVICE
Simple. Straight. Be of service. Truly.
That means you have to be dedicated to others, to the service of others versus being primarily concerned about yourself. You have to think from and about others – what is their need, challenge, problem or want? And once you’ve discovered that, you have to solve that better than anyone can or does.
#2: ADD VALUE
You must add value to anything you touch – whether it’s by doing a great job for your employer or taking a material and turning it into a useful product or leveraging incredible human intelligence and technology and turning that into something wonderful.
So, my question for you my awesome, intelligent, committed, loving, generous leader: whether at home or at work, in your life, in your business, in the world, is this: Where are you adding value? And are you doing that more or less than e.g. your competition? How are you improving you ‘exchange’?
And if you look at all the mega-entrepreneurs of my time — think of Peng Leig and Jack Ma of Alibaba, Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk of Airbnb and so many more — they have one thing in common. They each took a widespread human need and leveraged technology to solve the problem on a mass scale.
So, another question for you then my darling — WHAT IS YOUR CONTEXT? Where is your attention, your focus? On a need for others or on your needs? There’s a big difference. Ironically, what might seem counterintuitive to you at some point in your journey, has been my absolute experience, that when you focus on others, you get everything you ever dreamed of.
#3: LASTLY, PLEASE REMEMBER: YOU MATTER.
Buckminster Fuller said it best:
“Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren’t any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn’t be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person.”
