WHY ‘SMALL’ IS MORE POWERFUL THAN ‘BIG’

Insights Sep 08, 2017

Many people have asked why B1G1: Business for Good believes in “the power of small”. Why do we target small businesses, small charity organizations, and encourage giving small amounts with small impacts.

TO FILL A NEED

We realized that small business owners wanted to make a difference, but didn’t know how, or didn’t have the time or resources to do so. They didn’t have a ‘CSR department’ to figure things out. Nor did they have large amounts of money to give back.

At the same time, we also realized that smaller charity organizations were doing fantastic things on the ground but continuously struggled to raise enough funds to expand their reach as they didn’t have a marketing department to attract more donors.

We saw the need to connect the dots between small businesses and small charities.

SO YOU CAN START ‘TODAY’

Another benefit of the power of small giving is how achievable it is.

Many business owners think that they will do something great when they become successful. They will donate large amounts once they make more money. They will travel and enjoy life when they retire.

But they often delay and procrastinate – especially when aiming to do something too big.

Instead, they could do something meaningful today, if they only aimed to do something small.

They could take a short time off from work to visit a new place. Or pay more attention today to the people around them in order to increase the quality of time they have.

Business owners can give something small that they have today and help someone in a small way. And when they break down their hopes and aspirations into small actions, they can easily achieve them and enjoy them regularly.

THE PITFALLS OF ‘BIG’

On the flip side, one potential issue with big initiatives and big actions is that when something is implemented too quickly on a large scale, those involved usually do not see the possible consequences until it’s too late and has actually become a big issue.

This is not to say that large organizations do not produce effective results, because they can embrace the power of small too.

Large organizations that have the agility, creativity and responsiveness commonly seen in small organizations can create tremendous impact and positive change.

If more and more people and businesses around the world started giving and sharing something small that they have today, it could invoke a far more powerful change than what one very wealthy person, a single corporation, or even a government could do.
