AMANDA FISHER: WE CAN ALL BE QUIET HEROES

The purpose-driven business series features a different Business for Good every Thursday to showcase their unique giving stories. We hope these stories inspire you with interesting, new and joyful ideas on how to integrate giving into your business.

Being the loudest doesn’t mean you make the most impact. This week’s business owner is a testament to how we can all be quiet heroes, making a difference in the lives of others unaware.

INTRODUCING…AMANDA FISHER!

WHO: Amanda Fisher – The Numbers Matter

WHERE: Sydney, Australia

WHAT: I’m an author, educator and Chartered Accountant. I work with business owners to help them understand the numbers in their business, read financial reports, set goals and make informed decisions about their business.

CAN YOU GIVE US A SENSE OF WHY YOU DECIDED TO START GIVING?

I was brought up in a socially-conscious family environment where volunteering was part and parcel of daily life. I’ve known Paul Dunn since the 1990s and when I heard about the B1G1 program I immediately signed up as a Lifetime Partner. It aligned perfectly with my beliefs and I was delighted to know that 100% of the giving goes to the projects.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PROJECT(S) TO GIVE TO AND WHY?

I’m an avid believer in the power of education. Some of my favorite projects are those that relate to educating adults in business skills, and I do love helping the children too. My other favorite project is the Goats in Kenya. I love the idea that by giving a goat, I am helping establish someone else into a business.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE IMPACT B1G1 HAS HAD ON YOUR COMPANY AND ITS CULTURE?

I have linked my giving to the different aspects of my business. I’m not a person who shouts what I do from the rooftops, as a result, the impact is lessened somewhat. Although I have details about B1G1 on my website, I don’t put it at the front of what I do. I don’t have it in my email signature, I don’t tell my clients that if they sign up I’ll give x through B1G1. Mine is a quieter approach, more aligned with my beliefs and not to impose those beliefs on others. It does not in any way lessen the impact of the giving I do. It makes me feel good knowing I’m not only helping the clients I serve but that I am also supporting others. I have had some lovely feedback when I’ve sent Giving Certificates.

WHAT’S THE BEST EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD THROUGH YOUR GIVING ACTIVITIES AND BEING A PART OF B1G1?

It’s just knowing that I’m helping others that’s important to me.

DOES ANYBODY IN YOUR TEAM HAVE AN INTERESTING GIVING STORY TO SHARE?

One client comes to mind who has actively been giving through B1G1 since Paul Dunn presented to a group of my clients a few years ago. He has a monthly promotion in his store, picking a different project each month. His whole team is involved and he and his family have been able to attend the Study Tours too. He says that it has been life-changing and a great opportunity for his children to understand issues in the world.
